For California high school students graduating in spring 2026, the college admissions landscape has shifted significantly over the past two years. Here is what matters most heading into the application season.
The University of California made its test-blind policy permanent for all campuses through at least the current application cycle. This means SAT and ACT scores will not be considered in admissions decisions โ not even as optional context. The UC Regents voted to develop a new, UC-specific standardized test, but that is still in development and not in use for the Class of 2026 or 2027. For these applicants, grades, coursework rigor, personal insight questions, and extracurriculars carry the full weight.
California State University campuses also remain test-free for Class of 2026 applicants (fall 2026 entry). However, CSU has signaled it may revisit this policy in coming years, especially for competitive programs. For now, your GPA and completion of AโG requirements are the primary academic criteria.
Both UC and CSU require completion of 15 college-preparatory AโG courses with a C or better (and ideally a B or better for competitive applicants). The most commonly missed requirement is the two years of laboratory science. Students should verify their AโG completion with their school counselor no later than junior year.
UC applicants answer four of eight Personal Insight Questions, 350 words each. These have replaced the traditional personal statement and are the primary way applicants distinguish themselves. Strong PIQ writing is specific, reflective, and honest โ not a resume summary. Many students benefit from a writing tutor or academic coach to refine their responses.
